The Manor Royal BID is excited to be working with Hemiko to deliver The Manor Royal Heat Network, a green infrastructure project that will supply low carbon heat to businesses and residents across Manor Royal and North Crawley area. Construction is due to start in Q2 2026 and Hemiko are engaging with potential connections across the network now.
Heat networks are a low carbon alternative to gas boilers, providing both heating and hot water. They work by collecting unused or wasted heat from the local area to create hot water, which is then sent via a network of underground pipes into homes and buildings. Heat networks are the cheapest way for industrial and urban areas such as Manor Royal to decarbonise.
Hemiko is the leading UK heat networks utility provider. They invest in low carbon heat networks, build them, and run them. They are already involved in two other heat networks in West Sussex, operating the Crawley town centre heat network on behalf of Crawley Borough Council and delivering the Worthing Heat Network. Hemiko has £1 billion to invest into town and city-scale heat networks across the UK by 2030.
Phase one of the Manor Royal Heat Network will supply buildings across Manor Royal and the North Crawley area with c.45 GWh per year of low carbon heating. Hemiko will invest £45m into the first phase, rising to £410m over the full build out. Heating will be supplied using waste heat from local data centres. Water source heat pumps are also being explored to meet additional demand.
The project promises to deliver wide-ranging economic and environmental benefits to businesses and residents in the Manor Royal and North Crawley area, as well as contribute to wider strategic aspirations, such as those of the Manor Royal BID for a more sustainable business district. Hemiko are on a mission to make sure that communities benefit from local energy projects by creating green jobs, developing local skills, and contributing to education.
