Saturday 26th September saw Body Health Gatwick host its first open day. BHG is a Sports Injury and Performance Testing Centre and the day was a great way to show off some of the cool things that they do. They were joined by BodyDexa, a mobile Dexa scanning company who base themselves at the unit every month. And also Fitness Genes, who look at genetic traits through DNA found in saliva.
The day started off with strength and conditioning coach Paul, who did a 'Learn to Lift' class which showed the participants how to set up a gym session for any level and be confident using free weights. He also helped to debunk some classic gym myths and what a good layout would look like for a session including some mobility work. This was followed by an Olympic Lifting class hosted by Danielle, getting the participants to put a barbell over their head and introduce them to a new sport.
Into the afternoon, both Sports Therapists, Josh and Danielle, went into the therapy side of things and did a massage with injury assessment demo. Followed by how we test clients using the VALD force platforms and frame. These bits of kit allow us to see force and strength imbalances in various movements or jumps, with actual numbers at the end not just interpretation. It's great for injury rehabilitation to see if a person is getting better, but also for those looking to improve sporting performance where possible weaknesses are.
The main event of the day was the VO2 max demo done by Sports Scientist Danielle, (and making Josh run lots). Going through the whole test and the results to see how cardiorespiratory fit Josh was. It gave accurate info for his VO2 max score, his running training zones and how efficient his breathing was. This was paired with gait analysis to look at his running form to make him more efficient as a runner in the future.
