Zoe Wright of B&CE Group Explains Why She Supports the BID
Having worked on Manor Royal for the past 9 years, I'm passionate about making a difference for the companies based here and the people that work within the Manor Royal community. Having worked here for nearly a decade, I was delighted to become a Director of the BID, mainly as it opens up opportunities to influence on the issues that matter to me and my employer, B&CE.
As the Director of People & Premises at B&CE, it might not surprise you, that for me, People are the key to a successful business. Thanks to initiatives run by the BID, such as the volunteering opportunities at The People's Park, it's allowed people to work together in groups and give something back to their local community, getting them out from behind their desk can only be a positive thing. And being out in the open air with fellow colleagues has a multitude of benefits including: team working skills, creativity and compassion, which are valuable skills in the workplace.
Thanks to the Manor Royal initiatives, B&CE has been able to raise its profile and attract local talent who believe in what we do and our values (showing compassion, keeping promises & creating simplicity), we want to create better lives for people in work, both financially and physically through our charitable trust and our Occupational Health company Constructing Better Health. And more recently we were delighted to be accredited with the Gold standard for our Investors in People assessment and placed in the Sunday Times top 100.
I'm also part of the People Forum that runs across the manor Royal, creating local networking opportunities and knowledge sharing for HR Practitioners across the Manor Royal. This has been useful for B&CE as a growing business, as you can never rest on your laurels and being up-to-date and aware of local and national economic and employment issues are extremely important to enable the development of effective people strategies for the businesses that operate here. With our second site due to open in July, we are excited about our future on Manor Royal and the employment opportunities that we are able to bring to the local area.
It's great working within an area with an abundance of employment opportunities and high employment, but that comes with its challenges, specifically recruiting talented staff. Therefore, it's important to have the infrastructure on the Manor Royal to facilitate a comfortable and sociable working environment, and some of the projects that the Manor Royal has been able to deliver since I began my tenure as a Director have been critical to this, for example: installation of new signage, discounted training for Manor Royal companies and The People's Park at Crawters Brook to name just a few.
Another challenge we're currently looking at is parking. Parking has been a specific issue for B&CE and the BID has put me in touch with local stakeholders to enable us to create an effective sustainable travel policy for the business, which promotes the use of public transport whilst balancing the needs of drivers. I'm currently part of a working group looking at travel and transport issues and the potential to develop a Pocket Park at Manor Royal Corner (next to B&CE HQ) - watch this space! But having the opportunity to influence big projects like these has been an invaluable opportunity and has allowed me to create a useful network across the Manor Royal area.
